Tunnel Vision Duathlon
CANCELLED DUE TO LOW PARTICIPATION
We regret to inform our registered participants that we are cancelling Tunnel Vision this year. At this time, there are only 30 participants signed up, and we had hoped that - in its second year - we'd see double that number. We LOVE events and seeing people out on trails, but Tunnel Vision requires a great deal of logistics, volunteer hours, and effort, and we feel that the low projected total of participants doesn't warrant hosting the event. At this time, we will evaluate the event and may reschedule or re-configure it for the future. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but hope that this gives you plenty of time to make alternate plans, especially during one of the loveliest times of year. Trails will still be open, and leaves will be turning colors. All participants will receive a full refund, which should show on your credit cards in just a few days. Please contact Ashlee at [email protected] with any additional questions. |
Info
Tunnel Vision is the only event of its kind in the Royal Gorge Region - a duathlon that pairs mountain biking with hiking/trail running. This event will feature a neutral start by bike, followed by a hike / trail run up one of the community’s newest trails, and a bike ride back to the finish line. This event is designed to be fun and challenging for a WIDE variety of ages and experience levels. Choose your distance and enjoy a mild bike ride (with one hill), plus a short, medium, or long run / hike up one of Cañon City's most exciting trails - Royal Cascade. You'll love the views from any distance!
Courses
Featuring a start at Centennial Park - the “hub” of outdoor recreation in the community - the out-and-back courses will then leave the park via the Riverwalk to the Tunnel Drive Trailhead. Participants will traverse this portion via bike (sorry, e-bikes not allowed). At the trailhead for Royal Cascade, they will park their bikes (attended by volunteers) and begin a climb (hike or run) up Royal Cascade. Those in the Beginner race will ascend about .25 miles up to the turnaround. Intermediate participants will climb about halfway - 1.5 miles - to a turnaround, and Advanced participants will attempt a summit of Fremont Peak. All appropriate course marking, safety precautions, volunteer staffing, and prior notification will be made. In the case of adverse weather, a ‘virtual’ option will be made available and post-race celebration will take place on Sunday, October 13th.
This event is designed to be welcoming to a wide variety of participants - both novice and advanced. It is FAR’s mission to encourage outdoor recreation in our community, and we feel that this event will encourage a greater number of individuals from our region to participate.

faq's
I have limited skills on a mountain bike. Can I do this ride?
Yes! The bike portion is along the Arkansas Rivewalk - a wide, gravel trail that doesn't have any rocks or technical sections. There is one hill, but if you're uncomfortable or can't make it up - just walk! (Plenty of people do.)
I heard Royal Cascade is really steep. How steep?
Yes, Royal Cascade is pretty steep. This is why we offer three distances: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. If you choose the beginner section, you'll only climb about 100 feet of elevation gain on the .25 miles that you climb. That's about like climbing 9 flights of stairs. The intermediate climbs 1,000 feet, which is about 90 flights of stairs. The advanced option is a BIG one - with over 2,200 feet of total elevation gain. This option is only for those who are in great physical condition and used to singletrack trail running / hiking.
What are the age limits for beginner / intermediate and the advanced courses?
You know your child best, so we trust all parents / guardians to make the best choices for their children given the terrain, distances, and steep nature of Royal Cascade. Our recommended age limits are: Beginner - age 6 and above, Intermediate - age 10 and above, Advanced - age 15 and above.
What does "cutoff time at Royal Cascade 1.5 mile Station" mean?
We encourage everyone to challenge themselves to whichever distance they'd like to try, but please know that you should be able to complete the distance at a pace that will allow everyone to finish the event in a timely manner - so that our volunteers can wrap up and we can be sure everyone is back safely before noon. At 10:45, all intermediate and advanced participants MUST be through the 1.5-mile station on Royal Cascade. If not, they will be turned around and must head back to the park.
